Welcome to ELA seminars for 5th- 8th grade with Mrs. Burdick

This is my 4th year teaching ELA small group seminars at Saint Hilary School. I hold a BA in English from Villanova University and a Masters in Literature (specifically Irish literature) from Trinity College, University of Dublin. From Hibernia Language School in Dublin, I received a TEFL certification to teach English as a second language. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to teach ELA to your children and am looking forward to a productive year.

Thank you!

HOMEWORK: All homework for Mrs. Burdick's seminar will be posted on the general HOMEWORK wiki page of each grade. Some of the homework will be workbook based, some will require the completion of online assignments.

SEMINAR CONTENT:
Students in 5th-8th grade will complete a variety of different projects and lessons based on the multitude of ELA topics: grammar, critical reading and writing, poetry, informational texts, short stories, and media analysis.

For 6th-8th grade, our main resource will be "COLLECTIONS" by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, a comprehensive digital and print approach to ELA. Recognized as the nation's leading ELA program for grades 6-12, "COLLECTIONS" offers a balance of complex texts with fiction, nonfiction, and informational. Students will balance a traditional textbook with a multitude of online support resources such as an E-reader, online videos from sources such as The History Channel and A&E, and interactive lessons for writing, speaking, and listening.

Students in 8th grade will also complete an 'Introduction to Shakespeare' module, exposing them to his plays and poetry, in preparation for high school.

It promises to be a vibrant, challenging, learning environment!
